Fingering charts, piano scales
Notes:
This chart was given to me by Prof. Escadon, when
I studied with her at the University of Miami, around 1999.
I distilled them to a statement about where the 4-th finger is placed.
The other fingers fall into place naturally, the thumb generally going
under the third finger.
For instance, in C (major and all three minors:
natural, harmonic, melodic) the left hand has the
4-th finger on the II note of the scale, hence the 3-ird finger goes
over the thumb to strike the A (or A flat in the case of natural and
harmonic minor, and melodic minor when descending).
The right hand has the 4-th on the
VII of the scale, so the thumb must go under the 3-ird finger to
strike the F.
-
For C D E G A in all modes the left hand fourth finger
is on the second note of the scale, and the right hand
fourth finger is on the seventh note of the scale.
-
For F all modes the left hand fourth finger is on the second,
the right hand fourth finger is on the fourth (the B-).
-
The remaining scales are shown according to the note. Generally
the right hand fourth finger is on the B- and the left hand
fourth finger is on the first flat encountered ascending.
