Using the Indy Laboratory

The SGI Indy lab is a collection of 17 Indy workstations in room CC426 (Ungar Building) plus a file server workstation (in the next room). It belongs to the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

Accounts have been created for use on all of the Indy lab machines. Login names are formed from the first letter of your firstname, the first letter of your middle name, the first two letters of your family name, and the course number. The password is the same first four letters followed by the last 4 digits of your university ID. For example, if John Andrew Vance, ID 123-45-6789, is doing MTH555, then the account name is java555 and the password is java6789. If you can't login, please email or see Irina. Once logged in, you should change your password according to the sys admins' guidelines.

For an modem connection from the outside, dial 305 2846010 and type

    connect indy-lab
at the LOCAL> prompt. You should have your software use vt100 emulation.

You can also telnet-ssh to the lab machines:

    telnet ocala.cs.miami.edu
    ssh OneOfTheMachines
where OneOfTheMachines is one of antietam, appomattox, bull-run, chickamauga, fort-sumter, franklin, gettysburg, harpers, manassas, merrimac, monitor, nashville, sharpsburg, shiloh, vicksburg, wilderness, yazoo.

The usual UNIX tools are available, including elm for email, the vi editor, and the c++ compiler.
