Welcome to CS Department teaching and projects Linux Labs

Two Linux computer labs are available for the students who take classes at the Computer Science Department. The first is located in room 305 Ungar and hosts 31 Dell Optiplex 9020 PCs. They are all configured the same way and run CentOS 7.
The second lab is in room 310T. It hosts 6 Dell Precision T1700. It also has space for CS students to come and work on their laptops. If a student takes a CSC class he/she is eligible for a user account in the lab.
For each CSC class a separate account is created. For example if a student takes csc220 and csc521 two separate accounts will be created in the lab for this student. These accounts only exist for the duration of a semester and must be used only for a corresponding class. At the end of a semester accounts are archived and not accessible anymore. User names and passwords are distributed in class. If you did not get your username and password in class, e-mail irina@cs.miami.edu. Each student is assigned the same password for all his/her Computer Science classes. User names and passwords are distributed during classes or labs. Once you know your user name and a password you can login to any computers in the Lab.
Computers are also available for remote login. The only machine, available via ssh from the outside is johnston.cs.miami.edu. This is our server and users are not supposed to ssh to any other machine in the Lab See file ~irina/hostnames on johnston for the list of the machines. It is recommended to ssh to any machine from this list immediately after you log in johnston.
If you have Windows, see instructions how to download Shell Client and SSH Secure Transfer Protocol to your home computer
http://www.cs.miami.edu/~irina/install_ssh.html

If you have Linux ssh is usually installed. MAC also has ssh and sftp available from the terminal. Another option is to install putty for remote login and pcftp for remote file transfer.

If you want to change your password after you logged in, please use yppasswd command.

To choose a good password see
