Floats III: Float overflow
Although there are all these rules for positioning the upper edge
and left edge of a float
(for a left float, the right edge for a right float), the
expanding edge of a float, typically its bottom, can extend
beyond its container, and content in the normal flow does the
correct thing, that is, of flowing around it.

So the red background float extends beyond the bottom of the blue
containing block. This text flows around the extended float, but
we are showing the border of this block so you can see that the
block itself does not avoid the float.
